Amarillo, TX Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Sec. 16-3-326 of the Bicycles, Scooters and Similar Devices article requires cyclists to use a designated bicycle lane, defined as an area within a roadway marked for bicycles under the City's current Hike and Bike Master Plan, instead of the general travel lanes. A rider may leave the bike lane only to make an immediate left-hand turn under state traffic rules, when an obstruction blocks the lane or path, or when other circumstances require entering the roadway to preserve the safety of the rider or someone else.

On a designated Hike and Bike path, which is off the roadway entirely, riders must follow the separate regulations the Parks and Recreation Department sets for that path. No one may ride a bicycle on or across the freeway lanes of any expressway, and where no bicycle lane exists at all, riders must follow the same Texas traffic laws that apply to motor vehicles. The exclusion runs both ways: Sec. 16-3-333 makes it a separate offense for a motor vehicle driver to enter a designated bicycle lane, unless no bicyclist is present and the entry is necessary to complete a turn or avoid a safety hazard.

Article VIII also sets a bicycle speed limit tied to the posted limit for the roadway (Sec. 16-3-327), and bars bicycles from freeway lanes and, within the Central Business District, from sidewalks (Sec. 16-3-330(a)).
