Hackensack, NJ Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Section 63-4B of the City Code, part of Chapter 63's bicycle article, governs bicycle lane use on Hackensack roadways. Whenever a bicycle lane has been established, any cyclist riding slower than the normal flow of traffic must ride within that lane; the section lists three situations where a rider may leave it: to overtake or pass another bicycle, vehicle or pedestrian when it cannot be done safely inside the lane; to prepare for a turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; and when reasonably necessary to avoid debris or another hazardous condition.

Section 63-4F separately requires a cyclist leaving a bicycle lane to wait until the movement can be made safely and to give an appropriate signal first. Motor vehicles get the opposite obligation under § 63-4G: once a bicycle lane exists on a roadway, drivers may not drive or park in it, with three exceptions: performing a parking maneuver where parking is otherwise permitted, entering or leaving the roadway, or maneuvering around a parked vehicle that is blocking the flow of traffic. Article I of Chapter 63 applies these rules to ordinary bicycles as well as low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles operated on any Hackensack street, sidewalk, public way, park or other public property, per § 63-1, and riders otherwise carry the same rights and duties as motor vehicle drivers under § 63-3.
