Macon-Bibb County, GA Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Under Sec. 28-30 of the general code, Macon-Bibb County establishes bicycle paths or sidewalks along streets listed in the county's bike route street inventory, a document incorporated into the Code by reference and kept on file with the clerk of the commission and the traffic engineer. § 40-6-294, and any route running along a street or sidewalk must be delineated with signage so riders can identify the designated bicycle lane of traffic. Sec. 28-31 separately governs sidewalk riding: it is unlawful to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk within the county's central business district (defined by name as Fifth Street from Riverside Drive to Oglethorpe Street, including the stretch of Martin Luther King Jr.

Boulevard from Walnut to Mulberry Street; Oglethorpe Street from Fifth to First Street; First Street from Oglethorpe Street to Riverside Drive; and Riverside Drive from First to Fifth Street) unless that particular sidewalk is designated part of the bike route. Outside the central business district, every county sidewalk is designated a bicycle route for riders age ten or under. Any bicyclist on a sidewalk anywhere in the county must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians. The Macon police department's bicycle patrol is exempt from these sidewalk restrictions so officers can enforce local, state and federal law from a bicycle. These rules sit in Chapter 28, Article II of the general code (traffic regulations), not the land development resolution.
