Wichita has expanded bike lanes along Douglas, Central, Hillside, and the Arkansas River Path. Cyclists must obey traffic signals, ride with traffic flow, and yield to pedestrians on shared-use paths under city traffic code.
Wichita Bike Plan 2.0 has rolled out painted lanes, sharrows, and protected segments primarily downtown and through Riverside. The Arkansas River Path runs more than 25 miles connecting parks. Cyclists 16 and older are not required to wear helmets under Kansas state law, though it is encouraged. Bicycles operate as vehicles under KSA 8-1587 and must follow stop signs and signals. Sidewalk riding is generally permitted outside business districts where signs prohibit it. Headlights and rear reflectors are required after dark. The city has not adopted a Vision Zero plan, but bike-pedestrian fatalities remain a focus of the Wichita Police Department traffic unit.
Riding against traffic, running red lights, or riding without lights after dark can draw 30 to 60 dollar municipal citations plus court costs.
