Wichita permits shared electric scooter operators downtown under a city license. Riders must be 18 or older, ride on the street or bike lanes, and stay off most sidewalks within the central business district.
The city has worked with Bird and Lime style operators to deploy fleets primarily in downtown, Old Town, and along the Arkansas River corridor. Operators pay permit fees, share trip data with the city, and must rebalance vehicles daily. Riders must be at least 18, possess a valid drivers license, and follow vehicle traffic laws. Helmet use is encouraged but not mandated. Sidewalk riding is prohibited within downtown business district sidewalks where pedestrian density is highest. Improperly parked scooters blocking ADA ramps may be confiscated by city crews. Wichita has not adopted scooter low-income discount mandates seen in Los Angeles.
Riding under 18 or sidewalk riding downtown carries fines starting at 50 dollars. Operating impaired triggers DUI prosecution under KSA 8-1567 with substantial penalties.
