Ridgefield, CT Mobility & Curb Rules: E-Bike Classes (2026)

Ridgefield's bicycle and play-vehicle chapter was amended on September 17, 2025 specifically to address e-bikes on the Town's network of trails and sidewalks. Section 128-1(A) invokes the Town's authority under Connecticut General Statutes § 7-148(c)(7)(H)(xii) and bars any motored form of transportation from every public pathway, trail and sidewalk in Town, a category that reaches Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes and e-scooters equally since none is carved out. The only exception written into the section covers devices needed for ADA compliance, so wheelchairs and similar assistive mobility devices are unaffected.

Unlike the state's road-use classification system for e-bikes, the local ordinance doesn't distinguish among e-bike classes on the Town's own trails and sidewalks; it forecloses motorized travel there outright, regardless of motor wattage or whether the rider is also pedaling. Riders looking to legally operate an e-bike within Ridgefield are directed to public roadways, where Connecticut's statewide e-bike classification law, not this chapter, controls. Enforcement runs through § 128-1(C), which sets a base fine of $250 per offense, an amount the Board of Selectpersons can adjust but never above the ceiling state law allows.

The chapter's amendment history shows the section was last revised in 2025, distinguishing today's flat ban from the original 1998 ordinance that predates e-bikes and e-scooters as a category.
