Ridgefield, CT Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Section 250-7(A) of the Noise Ordinance folds the state's vehicle-noise rules directly into Town law: any motor vehicle operated within Ridgefield's limits must meet the decibel levels set in RCSA §§ 14-80-1a through 14-80a-10a, as those state regulations are amended from time to time, rather than a locally drafted dBA figure. That reference sweeps in excessive exhaust, defective mufflers and other engine noise sources measured under the state's own testing method. Because the standard is incorporated by reference rather than restated, an officer citing a loud vehicle applies the current RCSA figures, not a fixed number printed in Chapter 250. The Town's general noise definitions still matter around the edges: 'motor vehicle' under § 250-2 carries the meaning given in C.G.S. § 14-1(a)(51), and the chapter's variance process in § 250-6 has no application to a moving vehicle. A vehicle equipped with a sound-amplifying device faces a second, separate limit under § 250-7(B).
