Summary
Edison's code still authorizes red-light camera enforcement at approved intersections, but the state pilot law behind it expired statewide in December 2014.
The Township hereby determines to install and utilize a traffic control signal monitoring system (the "system") at various intersections within the Township as approved by the Commissioner of Transportation pursuant to P.L. 2007, Chapter 348 (the "Act"). ... Any recorded image or information collected in connection with a traffic control signal violation shall not be retained after sixty (60) business days following the collection of any fine or penalty.
Official source re-checked September 7, 2026: no newer edition of the code had been published (publisher’s edition: rev 4904708; v19 updated 2026-03-25; through 03-25-2026).
Full Breakdown
Edison Township Code § 7-41, adopted in 2008 under P.L. 2007, c.348, authorized a traffic control signal monitoring system at intersections approved by the Commissioner of Transportation, required Township Council approval by resolution, and set rules for issuing summonses, retaining recorded images (60 business days after a fine, or 2 business days if no summons issues within 40 days), and joint owner/operator liability. New Jersey's five-year red-light camera pilot program under that 2007 law expired December 16, 2014 and was not renewed statewide, so the cameras themselves are no longer running even though this section remains on the books. No school-zone speed camera provision appears in Edison's code.
Violations & Fines
As written, a system violation would generate a summons issued by the Division of Police after image review, with owner/operator joint liability; in practice no camera program is currently active following the 2014 statewide pilot expiration.
