Edison, NJ Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Edison Township Code § 12-27.7b1 and b2 flatly prohibit two things regardless of the numeric Table 1 limits: operating a radio, television, phonograph or similar sound-reproduction device so it creates a "noise disturbance" for anyone besides the operator, and using a loudspeaker or public address system between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. so that sound crosses a residential real property line. Separately, § 12-27.6 sets Table 1 maximum permissible sound levels measured at the receiving property line: a residential receiving property is capped at 55 dBA (7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.) and 50 dBA (10:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m.) from another dwelling in a multidwelling building, and at 65 dBA daytime / 50 dBA nighttime from commercial or industrial sources; measurements inside a dwelling unit are taken mid-room with exterior doors and windows closed.

"Noise disturbance" is defined in § 12-27.3 as sound that endangers safety or health, disturbs a person of normal sensitivities, or endangers property. Enforcement runs through the Department of Health and Human Services Director and designated Noise Control Officers (§ 12-27.2, § 12-27.4), who may issue a summons or, in lieu of one, an abatement order requiring compliance within a reasonable time (§ 12-27.10b) unless the violation is willful or knowing. A source owner may apply to the Business Administrator for a variance from any provision, paying a $25 processing fee, describing interim noise-control measures and a compliance schedule; a variance runs no more than one year (§ 12-27.9).

Noise from municipally sponsored or approved celebrations is exempt (§ 12-27.8d), as is noncommercial public speaking and assembly on public spaces or rights-of-way (§ 12-27.7a).
