Quiet hours in Edison, NJ — also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time — define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Edison Township regulates noise under Code Chapter 12, §12-27 (Health Regulations and Licensing). The local ordinance is on the NJDEP master list of certified municipal noise codes and operates alongside the statewide Noise Control Code (N.J.A.C. 7:29), which establishes 50 dBA nighttime / 65 dBA daytime limits at residential property lines.
Edison's noise control rules were relocated from former §10-1 into Chapter 12 Health Regulations and Licensing as Section 12-27. Because Edison is a delegated municipality under New Jersey's Noise Control Act (N.J.S.A. 13:1G-1 et seq.), the township enforces both its local ordinance and the NJDEP standards in N.J.A.C. 7:29-1.2, which set continuous-airborne-sound limits at receiving residential property lines of 65 dBA from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 50 dBA from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (with a 50 dBA / 50 dBA standard 'any time' for industrial-to-residential receivers). The §12-27.7 weekend amendment further restricts certain noise-generating activities (lawn equipment, power tools, construction) to between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Penalties follow Edison's general penalty section in Chapter 1, §1-5: first offense fine of $25 to $250; subsequent offenses minimum $200 up to the maximum authorized by N.J.S.A. 40:49-5 (currently $2,000 per offense for municipal ordinance violations, plus possible community service).
