Edison, NJ Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Township Code § 7-37 designates certain street locations as Loading Zones and bars anyone from parking there during the posted times except to load or unload goods and materials. The section sets a floor on how these zones may be laid out: "Minimum length for all loading zones is fifty (50) feet," and the Township cannot establish a Loading Zone anywhere that standing or parking is already prohibited by state statute, cross-referencing N.J.S.A. 39:4-138 (New Jersey's stopping, standing and parking law). The specific street-by-street loading zone table in the ordinance itself is marked "(Reserved)" in the current code, meaning the Township designates individual zones by supplemental resolution or sign posting rather than a master list printed in the chapter text.

Loading zone violations are enforced under the general Chapter 7 traffic framework. Section 7-3 (Tow-Away) treats any vehicle parked in violation of the chapter, which includes parking in a loading zone outside the permitted loading/unloading use, as a "nuisance and a menace to the safe and proper regulation of traffic"; a Police Officer may have the vehicle towed, and the owner bears the reasonable cost of removal and storage before reclaiming the vehicle. Section 7-4 (Penalties) sets the default fine structure for the whole traffic chapter: unless a more specific penalty applies, a conviction carries a fine of not more than $50, imprisonment for up to fifteen days, or both, at the Municipal Court's discretion.
