Meriden, CT Mobility & Curb Rules: Red-Light Cameras (2026)

Meriden Code §§ 200-48 through 200-63 establish the City's Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Device (ATESD) program, adopted under Connecticut General Statutes § 14-307c and administered by the Meriden Police Department as the traffic authority. Under § 200-48, an ATESD is a camera that records a vehicle's plate, date, time and location when it either exceeds the posted speed limit by 10 or more miles per hour or fails to stop for a steady red signal. Devices may be sited in school zones, pedestrian safety zones, and other approved locations under a plan the Chief of Police and the state Department of Transportation must approve, per § 200-49.

The Traffic Authority reviews violation, complaint and accident data every first quarter to pick new sites under § 200-50, and vendor contracts may not tie fees to the number of citations issued, per § 200-51. Section 200-53 gives every newly equipped location a 30-day warning-only period before real citations begin. A citation under § 200-54 must name the owner, describe the violation, location, date and time, include a link to the recorded images, and state the right to a hearing; it is mailed within 30 days of identifying the owner and is void if not mailed within 60 days of the violation.

Fines are set in § 200-55 at $50 for a first violation and $75 for each later one, plus up to a $15 electronic processing fee, with revenue restricted to transportation mobility, safety infrastructure or program costs. Owners may contest a citation within 10 days before a Hearing Officer appointed by the City Manager under § 200-56, following the procedure in C.G.S. § 7-152c.
