City Code § 3-1.8b(5) governs burglar alarms and expressly covers both a building and a motor vehicle: "an exterior burglar alarm of a building or motor vehicle must be activated in such a manner that the burglar alarm terminates its operation within five minutes for continuous airborne sound and 15 minutes for impulsive sound after it has been activated." While it is sounding within that window, the alarm is not held to the Table I and Table II decibel limits at § 3-1.6 and § 3-1.7 at all, so a compliant alarm cannot be cited on loudness alone.

An alarm that keeps sounding past five minutes (continuous) or 15 minutes (impulsive) loses that exemption and becomes a violation regardless of decibel level. The identical standard is restated as a nuisance-noise type at § 3-1.10d, which lets both the Noise Control Officer and any Police Department member enforce it directly, rather than only certified noise personnel. A recipient of an enforcement document can request a hearing in Bayonne Municipal Court under § 3-1.9/§ 3-1.10's closing paragraph. Conviction carries the Chapter 1 § 1-5 general penalty of up to $1,250 or 90 days, and because a stuck alarm is a continuing condition, each day it goes uncorrected can be charged as a separate offense under § 1-5.5.
