Sec. 14-52 sets a table of maximum permissible sound levels by zoning classification, with lower caps at night than during the day: residential zones drop from 65 dBA daytime to 60 dBA nighttime, commercial from 70 to 65, office from 65 to 60, and industrial from 79 to 75. A separate sentence in the same section singles out mechanical climate equipment, providing that heating and cooling systems, including air conditioners and heat pumps, are subject to the daytime levels enumerated above at all times. still must stay at or under 65 dBA, the daytime cap, rather than dropping to the 60 dBA nighttime limit that applies to most other noise sources.

The rule was carried into the current article by Ord. No. 14-13 in 2009 and reaffirmed in the 2023 rewrite, Ord. No. 14-20. Measurement follows the same Sec. 14-55 protocol used for other noise complaints: a calibrated Type 1 or Type 2 meter, held at least four feet above the ground and ten feet from obstructions, with the geometric mean of at least three readings controlling. Homeowners running older or poorly maintained HVAC compressors near a property line in a residential zone are the most exposed to this provision, since 65 dBA at night is a meaningfully higher bar to clear than the general 60 dBA nighttime cap.
