Spotsylvania County, VA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Sec. 12-116(a) sets out twelve specific parking prohibitions that apply on sidewalks, highways, streets, roads, public parking lots, travel lanes, and any privately owned road or street that connects to a public parking area. Drivers may not park on a sidewalk, in front of a public or private driveway without the property owner's permission, within an intersection or crosswalk, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, within 30 feet of the approach to a flashing beacon, stop sign or traffic signal, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, fire department connection, fire station entrance or rescue squad building entrance (or in any way that obstructs one), within 30 feet of a safety zone, alongside a street excavation in a way that obstructs traffic, on the roadway side of another vehicle already parked at the curb, wherever posted signs prohibit it, or in a manner that blocks a mailbox.

The sheriff's department or the county fire marshal enforces the article and issues citations under Sec. 12-122. Under Sec. 12-123, the base fine for most violations is $10 if paid to the treasurer before a formal notice is issued, but the fine jumps to $100 for violations of the hydrant clause in 12-116(a)(4), the fire-lane rule in 12-117, the commercial-parking rule in 12-118, or the disabled-parking rule in 12-119. Unpaid citations trigger a certified-mail notice under Sec. 12-124, and a vehicle carrying three or more outstanding, unpaid parking violations may be towed or immobilized by the sheriff's office under Sec.

12-126. The registered owner is presumed under Sec. 12-125 to have been the person who parked the vehicle at the time and place of the violation, unless rebutted.
