Amplified music rules in Apple Valley, CA — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Apple Valley Municipal Code prohibits radios, TVs, instruments and similar devices (9.73.060.A) and loudspeakers (9.73.060.B) from creating a noise disturbance across a residential property line between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Amplified sound is also limited by the zone-based exterior dBA standards in Table 9.73.050-A.
Amplified music in the Town of Apple Valley is regulated under Chapter 9.73 (Noise Control). Section 9.73.060.A covers 'using or operating any radio, television, phonograph, drum, musical instrument, or similar device' between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. so as to create a noise disturbance across a residential or commercial property line. Section 9.73.060.B specifically addresses loudspeakers: 'using or operating for any purpose any loudspeaker, loudspeaker system, or similar device between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., such that the sound therefrom creates a noise disturbance across a residential real property line.' Beyond those nighttime prohibitions, amplified sound at any hour must stay within the exterior noise limits of Table 9.73.050-A for the receiving zone (for example, 50 dBA daytime / 40 dBA nighttime in single-family residential, 50 dBA / 45 dBA in multi-family and public space). Because amplified music typically 'contains music or speech conveying informational content,' the standards in Table 9.73.050-A are reduced by 5 dBA for such noise, making the effective limits stricter. This is the Town's own ordinance and applies within the incorporated Town of Apple Valley; it is not the San Bernardino County code, which governs only unincorporated areas.
Amplified music or a loudspeaker that disturbs neighbors after 10 p.m., or that exceeds the zone dBA limits (as reduced 5 dBA for music/speech content), can be cited under 9.73.060.A/B and Section 9.73.050. Enforcement is by the Noise Control Officer; municipal-code violations are infractions or misdemeanors under the Town's general penalty provisions.
