Jackson, TN Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Jackson Municipal Code § 11-503 declares that creating any unreasonably loud, disturbing, and unnecessary noise is prohibited citywide, and subsection (d) applies that ban specifically to sound equipment: playing, using, or operating a radio receiving set, musical instrument, phonograph, or other sound-producing or sound-reproducing machine or device in a manner that disturbs the peace, quiet, and comfort of neighboring inhabitants, or at a volume louder than necessary for convenient hearing by the voluntary listeners actually in the room, vehicle, or chamber where it is playing.

The section then sets a specific, objective overnight standard: operating that set, instrument, phonograph, or device between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. in a manner that is plainly audible at a distance of fifty feet (50') from the building, structure, or vehicle where it is located is prima facie evidence of a violation, meaning police do not need a decibel meter reading to support a citation during those hours; audibility at fifty feet is enough. Outside those overnight hours, an officer must instead show the sound actually disturbed the peace, quiet, and comfort of neighboring inhabitants or exceeded what nearby voluntary listeners needed to hear.

Subsection (e) separately reaches sound cast onto the public streets from a loudspeaker or sound amplifier not mounted on a vehicle for the purpose of commercial advertising or attracting attention to a building, and subsection (h) adds a heightened standard near schools, churches, courts, and hospitals when conspicuous street signage marks them as such.
