Construction hours in Fort Lauderdale, FL — sometimes called construction noise rules or contractor work-hour ordinances — set when contractors can run power tools, hammers, and heavy equipment.
Section 17-7(4) makes it unlawful to operate construction, repair, alteration, or demolition equipment Monday through Saturday before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., or Sunday before 10:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. Permitted work within those hours is exempt under Section 17-8 if equipment uses original mufflers and noise-reducing gear.
Fort Lauderdale Code Section 17-7(4) governs construction noise. Equipment used in 'construction, repair, alteration or demolition work on buildings, structures, streets, alleys, or appurtenances' may not be operated with sound-control devices less effective than the originals, and it is unlawful to operate such equipment Monday through Saturday before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., or Sunday before 10:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., except for public works transportation projects approved under Section 17-9. Section 17-8(1) provides the matching exemption: construction operations between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday for which building permits have been issued (or permit-exempt government work) are exempt from the decibel standards, provided all equipment runs per manufacturer specs with manufacturer mufflers in proper condition. Large public-works transportation projects exceeding 180 days may obtain a project-specific noise management plan from the City Commission under Sections 17-9 and 17-10.
Off-hours construction is enforced by noise control officers under Section 17-3 and punishable under Section 17-2 (Section 1-6 / Chapter 11 penalties). Impulsive sound from controlled detonation of explosives at construction sites is exempt under Section 17-8(10).
