Under SMC 9.56.050 standard exceptions to general noise limits, the operation of residential power equipment โ defined to include mechanically powered saws, sanders, drills, grinders, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, edgers and similar tools โ is permitted only between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, and between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. Outside these windows, construction noise must comply with the general dBA limits in SMC 9.56.040. Commercial construction projects subject to a building permit are governed by the same time windows unless a noise variance is granted under SMC 9.56.060.
Working outside permitted hours is an infraction; repeat or aggravated violations may be charged as a misdemeanor under SMC 1.12 (max $1,000 fine / 6 months). Stop-work orders may be issued by the Building Division for permitted construction projects violating noise hours.
