Gas-powered leaf blowers have been banned within Sonoma city limits since December 22, 2016. Electric and battery leaf blowers are permitted only Monday-Saturday (excluding holidays) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Effective December 22, 2016, the City of Sonoma banned all gas-powered leaf blowers within city limits — one of the earliest such bans in California, predating CA AB 1346 (statewide small off-road engine phase-out). Only electric or battery-powered leaf blowers may be used, and only Monday through Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Use is prohibited on Sundays. Blowers may not be operated in a manner that directs dust or debris onto any neighboring parcel or public street. The rule applies to homeowners and commercial landscapers alike; landscaping companies bidding work in Sonoma must use electric equipment.
Violations are enforced by Code Enforcement (707) 732-1507 / codeenforcement@sonomacity.org as infractions under SMC Title 1. Per general penalty provisions, fines escalate by violation count; misdemeanor prosecution under SMC 1.12 carries up to $1,000 / 6 months. Historically, Sonoma issued its first citation under the ban within months of adoption.
