Vermilion Parish, LA Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Section 26-68(4) of the Vermilion Parish Code bars construction and demolition activity, excluding emergency work, between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays, and between 10:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on weekends and federal holidays. All motorized equipment used in construction and demolition must be operated with a muffler, which section 26-63 defines as a properly functioning sound dissipative device for abating the sound of escaping gases. Section 26-68 applies notwithstanding sections 26-65 and 26-67, so the article's exceptions do not excuse a night pour or a weekend-morning demolition.

The article defines its own calendar terms. A weekday begins on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. and ends the following Friday at 6:00 p.m., and a weekend begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. and ends the following Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Those definitions in section 26-63 decide which morning cutoff, 7:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., applies to a given night.

Power tools and landscaping equipment have a separate rule in section 26-68(1) and (2): on residential property they cannot be run from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and on commercial or industrial property they carry a 250 foot buffer from residential property lines.

A contractor or homeowner who needs to work outside those hours can apply to the Police Jury for a variance under section 26-70. Nighttime construction projects and homeowner construction projects are both listed categories. Applications must be filed at least ten business days before the effective date, the fee can be up to $50.00, a variance lasts up to one week, and no more than 12 variances per year go to the same location or person. The Police Jury decides in its sole discretion, sets conditions, and can revoke the variance for violations.
