Vermilion Parish, LA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 40-4 of the Vermilion Parish Code, titled load limits on parish roads and parking on parish roads, flips the usual street-parking rule. Subsection (b)(1) says that, except as otherwise provided, all vehicles are prohibited from parking on parish roads and parish road rights-of-way, including parish roads and rights-of-way located within recognized subdivisions of the parish. Parking is the exception, not the default.

Subsection (b)(2) lists who is exempt: municipal and parish utility and service vehicles, farm vehicles while engaged in agricultural activities and properly flagged, church services (including double parking), funeral services, fairs and festivals, and vehicles engaged in brief loading and unloading. Every exempt vehicle must still be parked in a manner that does not impede the safe flow of traffic. Subsection (c) adds a second carve-out: all parish, out-of-parish and commercial vehicles in the act of providing a service or intended trade are exempt from the section.

Subsection (a) of the same section sets the road-damage side of the rule inside recognized subdivisions: a maximum load limit of nine tons (18,000 pounds) with a maximum of three axles, with the violating party responsible for all damages and repairs.

Location-specific parking rules survive alongside this section. Sec. 40-1 provides that nothing in the chapter or the ordinance adopting the Code repeals any ordinance providing traffic regulations for specific locations, expressly including ordinances pertaining to parking, and those ordinances are ratified and confirmed. Sec. 40-2 ratifies the traffic control signs, signals, devices and markings in place on the Code's adoption date and makes them controlling. The section was amended most recently by Ord. No. 2001-O-17 (Amd. 6) on 5-17-2023. These rules cover unincorporated Vermilion Parish only; Abbeville, Kaplan and the other municipalities regulate their own streets.
