West Bloomfield, MI Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Section 15-141, the Township's disturbing-the-peace and noise ordinance, generally caps sound at the property line at 85 decibels (dBA) between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and 75 dBA overnight under subsection (c), but subsection (d) carves out specific activities that may exceed those limits if they stay within stated hours. Paragraph (d)(1) covers construction noises, defined as noise audible beyond the property line from the erection (including excavation), demolition, alteration or repair of any building, and from the excavation of streets and highways. That work is allowed between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; construction noise outside those windows is not covered by the exception and falls back under the general decibel limits and disturbance prohibitions in subsections (a) through (c). A contractor or resident needing louder or later work, such as an emergency structural repair or a tight project deadline, can seek a deviation permit issued in advance by the township supervisor or the supervisor's designee, but only on a showing that the noise will not unreasonably disturb residential occupants nearby.

The section, most recently amended by Ordinance No. C-755, Section 1, adopted September 12, 2011 (with earlier amendments in 1974, 1991 and 2003), sits in Chapter 15, Article V, Offenses Against Public Peace. Because the noise ordinance sets no separate fine, violations default to the misdemeanor penalty in Section 1-10: up to 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine, with continuing violations charged day by day.
