Anaheim, CA Noise Ordinances: Decibel Limits (2026)

AMC Section 6.70.010 prohibits creating sound from any premises that exceeds 60 dBA at any point on the property for extended periods. This applies to all stationary noise sources including mechanical equipment, HVAC systems, generators, and commercial operations. The city uses CNEL (Community Noise Equivalent Level) methodology which applies time-of-day penalties: evening noise (7 PM to 10 PM) receives a 5 dBA penalty and nighttime noise (10 PM to 7 AM) receives a 10 dBA penalty. Interior noise for residential portions of mixed-use developments must not exceed 45 dBA CNEL with windows closed. Construction and building repair noise is exempt from the 60 dBA limit during permitted hours (7 AM to 7 PM). Traffic noise, emergency vehicle noise, and other government activities are also exempt. The General Plan Noise Element uses 65 dB CNEL as the threshold for residential land use compatibility.
