Commercial areas allow 65 dB(A) daytime and 60 dB(A) overnight; manufacturing, industrial, and agricultural areas are capped at 80 dB(A) around the clock. A reading only counts as a violation if the limit is exceeded for more than 10 percent of a measurement period of at least 10 minutes, and the code allows the limit to run 10 dB(A) higher in daytime hours (5 dB(A) higher overnight) before it's a violation. Separate multifamily-dwelling limits (§ 46-42(12)) cap interior-to-interior sound at 55 dB(A) daytime/45 dB(A) overnight on weekdays.
