Full Breakdown

Under the Noise Control Ordinance, unamplified sound in residential zones is capped at 60 dBA from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 50 dBA overnight (Sec. 42-254(a), Table 1). Subsection (a)(2) carves electrical power tools and motor-powered, muffler-equipped lawn, garden and tree-trimming equipment out of that cap, but only during the 7:00 a.m.-to-10:00 p.m. window. Operate a gas leaf blower earlier or later and the exemption no longer applies, it has to meet the standard dBA limit instead, which a gas blower realistically can't clear, making the exempt hours a de facto operating schedule. The community development and police departments enforce the article on complaint.

Violations & Fines

Violating the noise ordinance is a simple misdemeanor or municipal infraction under Sec. 42-268, carrying a civil penalty up to $750 per violation, or $1,000 for a repeat offense, under Municipal Code Sec. 1-15.
