Quiet hours in Calaveras County, CA — also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time — define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Unincorporated Calaveras County's Noise Control ordinance (County Code Chapter 9.02) sets stricter limits at night. Section 9.02.030 prohibits sound that exceeds the background level by 10 dBA during the day (7 a.m.-10 p.m.) and by only 5 dBA at night (10 p.m.-7 a.m.) at the receiving property line.
Calaveras County has no incorporated 'curfew' style quiet hour with a flat decibel cap, but Chapter 9.02 of the County Code (Noise Control) builds a quieter nighttime period into its core standard. Under Section 9.02.030, a sound becomes an unlawful 'noise disturbance' when it exceeds the background sound level by at least 10 dBA during daytime hours, defined as 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., or by at least 5 dBA during nighttime hours, defined as 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., measured at or within the real property line of the receiving property. The tighter 5 dBA nighttime margin makes the same activity far more likely to violate the ordinance after 10 p.m. Separately, Section 9.02.050 prohibits noise from a party between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. that violates Section 9.02.030, and bars amplified loudspeaker or public-address sound across a residential property line during the same 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. window. The ordinance applies only to the unincorporated county; the City of Angels Camp, the county's only incorporated city, sets its own rules. Enforcement is complaint-driven through the Sheriff, who is designated the County Noise Control Officer.
A first violation of Chapter 9.02 is an infraction; a repeat violation within 12 months of a conviction or bail forfeiture is a misdemeanor. All violations are also a public nuisance abatable under Chapter 8.06, including administrative citations.
