Bethel, CT Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Section 108-6 of Bethel's noise ordinance addresses motor vehicles in two parts. First, it ties every vehicle operated within Town limits to the equipment noise standards already set by the state: Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies §§ 14-80a-1a through 14-80a-10a inclusive, the DMV rules governing exhaust systems, mufflers and vehicle noise output. Bethel does not set its own decibel figures for tailpipes or engines; it adopts the state's vehicle-equipment ceiling by reference and enforces it locally. Second, and separately, Section 108-6(B) targets sound amplifying devices on or inside a vehicle, such as car stereos, and caps the noise they emit at the same numeric limits set out in Section 108-5's noise-zone table, meaning a stereo audible past the vehicle into a Class A residential zone at night cannot exceed the 45 dBA ceiling that governs any other noise source reaching that zone.

The general prohibition in Section 108-4(B) reinforces this by separately barring any person from sounding a vehicle horn or other audible signal device beyond the Section 108-5 standards, except as a warning to prevent an accident. Violations of Section 108-6 fall under the same penalty schedule as the rest of Chapter 108: a $50 fine for a first offense, rising to $75 and then $100 for repeats within 30 days, enforced by the Bethel Police Department.
