Columbia, MO Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Columbia Code of Ordinances § 16-262 makes it unlawful to discharge vehicle exhaust into the open air "except through a muffler or other device which will effectively prevent loud or explosive noises." Section 16-273(a) separately bans engine brakes for any motor vehicle citywide, except for public safety vehicles, and § 16-258(d) caps a vehicle stereo at being plainly audible beyond 50 feet from the vehicle outside the downtown area (tighter, time-based limits apply downtown under § 16-258.1). All three rules apply throughout Columbia, Missouri, Boone County's seat. Violations of this noise article carry a fine of $75 to $1,000, up to three months' imprisonment, or both, under § 16-274.
