Taylor, MI Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Taylor City Code § 20-25(a) bars any person operating or controlling a parked or moving vehicle, including motorcycles and mopeds, from operating or permitting an electronically amplified sound system that produces sound clearly audible more than 50 feet from the vehicle, though commercial vehicles with products for sale are exempt. Subsection (c) narrows the ban further, exempting noise or music from temporary activities already permitted by the Code, parades and public gatherings approved by the city council, alarm systems, safety and warning signals such as steam or compressed-air whistles, and noise from city ambulances, police, and fire departments performing official duties.

This vehicle-stereo rule sits within Chapter 20's noise article alongside § 20-54(b)(9), which separately bans discharging engine exhaust into the open air except through a muffler or device that prevents loud or explosive noise, and § 20-54(b)(1), which restricts horns and signal devices on vehicles not in motion to genuine warning uses. Together these sections give the city three distinct, code-based tools against loud vehicle stereos, faulty mufflers, and unnecessary horn use.
