Troy, MI Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

5 of Chapter 88 - Nuisances covers vehicle noise in two subsections. Subsection (g), Engine Exhausts, bars discharging exhaust from "any steam engine, stationary internal combustion engine, or motor vehicle, except through a muffler or other device which effectively prevents loud explosive noises therefrom," meaning a car, truck or motorcycle without a functioning muffler, or one modified to be louder, is a Code violation regardless of complaints. Subsection (k), Noise, Sound Amplification, or Commotion in Vehicles, separately bans making a commotion, amplifying sound, or making "unnecessarily loud noises which are audible more than 50 feet from the vehicle," or otherwise disturbing the peace and good order of the neighborhood; that 50-foot audibility line is Troy's closest thing to a numeric stereo-noise standard, covering car stereos, subwoofers and revving engines alike.

5) separately requires an "efficient muffler which will insure noise levels comparable to that of a private passenger automobile" and treats racing engines or repeated acceleration/deceleration as inherently excessive noise. Together the provisions give Troy Police three distinct hooks: a defective-muffler exhaust citation, a 50-foot amplified-sound citation for vehicles generally, and a muffler-and-racing standard specific to motorcycles and mini-bikes.
