8A bars any driver from using a mechanical exhaust or decompression device, commonly called engine braking or a jake brake, on any street under municipal jurisdiction in the Township at any time. The section defines compression engine braking as a mechanical exhaust device used to aid braking, decompression or deceleration that results in loud or unusual vehicle noise, and it authorizes the Township to post signs at affected locations. Two narrow exceptions apply: when conventional brakes have failed and engine braking becomes necessary in an emergency, and when emergency equipment uses it for emergency purposes.

That obligation is placed on motor vehicle repair facilities, defined broadly to include garages, body shops, vehicle dealers and mobile repair operations, rather than on individual drivers directly. 9 rounds out the vehicle-noise rules by banning any horn or warning device that emits an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or is sounded for an unnecessary or unreasonable period, except when required by law or to warn of danger.
