Walton County, FL Outdoor Lighting: Billboard Lighting (2026)

I of the Walton County Land Development Code sets the Eglin-compatible lighting standards for signs inside the Military Influence Overlay District (MIOD), and Subsection I(5) specifically addresses conventional, non-digital off-premise signs, the category that covers most billboards. Each such sign face may be illuminated with no more than two luminaires, and every luminaire must carry a refractor and hood that focuses its light onto the sign face rather than outward or upward, with a maximum wattage of 400 watts per luminaire. 3 foot-candles over ambient light under Subsection I(6).

All signs within five miles of Eglin Air Force Base, billboards included, must be positioned with 'dark sky' approved shielding and may not face parallel to the base's boundaries or runways, and no MIOD sign lighting may resemble navigational aids, use laser or search lights, or project a beacon or strobe above the horizontal plane, all of which are separately listed as prohibited sources of glare under Subsection C. These billboard-lighting caps apply on top of, not instead of, the county's general permanent outdoor advertising sign standards in Chapter VI, which separately govern where a billboard can be sited, how big it can be, and how far apart competing billboards must be spaced.
