Unincorporated Snohomish County has no formal dark-sky ordinance, but its development standards require outdoor lighting to be hooded or shaded so direct light does not create glare when viewed from surrounding property or rights-of-way.
The county code does not adopt a comprehensive dark-sky lighting chapter, but glare-control language appears throughout Title 30. SCC 30.22.130 requires that artificial lighting be hooded or shaded so that direct outside lighting, if any, will not result in glare when viewed from the surrounding property or rights-of-way. Similar shielding requirements apply to arena and outdoor-facility lighting, and design-standard sections such as SCC 30.34A.110 impose lighting controls in certain zones. There is no county-wide curfew or lumen cap for ordinary residential yard lights, but nuisance glare that spills onto neighbors can be addressed under these standards and nuisance provisions.
Unshielded lighting that causes glare onto neighboring property or rights-of-way can be cited as a code or nuisance violation, with the county requiring shielding or redirection.
