Eden Prairie, MN Outdoor Lighting: Dark Sky Rules (2026)

Section 11.08, Subdivision 3 of the Eden Prairie City Code applies its outdoor lighting standards to every zoning district except Park and Open Space. Pole-mounted fixtures may not exceed twenty-five feet in height on a base of no more than three feet, for a total maximum height of twenty-eight feet, and the light source itself must be a downcast shoe box lens that throws light down rather than out. Wall-mounted fixtures must be positioned to cast light downward toward the ground and fitted with a shield directing that light to the ground; any upward lighting on a building exterior needs Council approval through Site Plan Review or City Planner sign-off through Administrative Site Review.

Bare incandescent, fluorescent or LED bulbs cannot be used anywhere they would be visible from adjacent property or the public right-of-way, except within a required setback area on that adjacent property. Lighting aimed at flagpoles, landscaping, fountains or statuary must be shielded with devices such as barn doors, baffles, louvers, skirts or visors so the beam does not spill past the object being lit, and canopy lighting has to be recessed and flush with the canopy ceiling with a flat glass lens.
