Redmond requires shielded, downward-directed outdoor lighting in commercial and multifamily projects under RMC Title 21 to limit light pollution and preserve nighttime views near parks.
Redmond Municipal Code Title 21 includes outdoor lighting standards for commercial, multifamily, and mixed-use development. The rules generally require fully shielded luminaires that direct light downward, color temperatures no higher than 3000K to 4000K depending on zone, and limits on foot-candle light levels at property lines and on adjacent streets. Parking lot pole heights are capped, and lighting must dim or reduce after business hours in non-essential areas. Near Marymoor Park, the Sammamish River Trail, Idylwood Beach Park, and other public open space corridors, the standards are tighter to reduce glare and preserve nighttime habitat and sky views. Single-family residential lighting is largely unregulated but must not cause a nuisance under the general nuisance code, and motion-triggered or sensor lighting is encouraged to limit wasteful illumination. New gas station canopy and electronic sign lighting have additional brightness caps.
