Salt Lake City, UT Outdoor Lighting: Light Trespass & Shielding (2026)

Under the zoning code's general provisions for residential districts, Salt Lake City Code section 21A.24.010.K requires that on-site lighting, including security and floodlights, be located, directed, or designed so it contains and directs light and glare only onto the property where the fixture sits. The rule applies citywide to every residential zoning district, covering homeowners who install motion-activated floodlights, porch lights, or yard security lighting. In the Foothills Protection districts, section 21A.24.010.P.5 goes further, banning floodlighting of buildings and limiting security lights to activation only when needed for immediate security. Building Services enforces compliance and can cite unshielded fixtures as zoning violations.
