West Bloomfield, MI Outdoor Lighting: Light Trespass & Shielding (2026)

Section 10-148 of the Charter Township of West Bloomfield Code of Ordinances is part of Article V, the township's ordinance addressing adverse secondary impacts of oil and gas activities, adopted by Ordinance No. C-800 on January 25, 2016. It does not set a general residential light-trespass standard for yards, driveways, or sports courts; the township's broader outdoor-lighting and glare rules for ordinary residential and commercial uses live in the separately published Zoning Ordinance, which is not part of this Code of Ordinances export. Where it does apply, to any oil or gas exploration, extraction, or development site operating under a township certificate of compliance, § 10-148 requires site lighting to be shielded, directed downward, and directed internally on the site so it does not create glare on public roads or on adjacent property, dwellings, and buildings.

Exterior lights must be turned off except when personnel are actively working on-site or when motion sensors trigger them. The section sits alongside companion site-development standards in the same article: § 10-146 requires a 25-foot landscape buffer of staggered 12-foot evergreens around a site's perimeter, and § 10-147 requires an eight-foot chain-link security fence. Violations of the oil and gas article's operating standards can support suspension or revocation of the operator's certificate of compliance under §§ 10-136 and 10-137, following a township clerk notice and, if requested, a township board appeal hearing under § 10-138.
