Abandoned vehicles in Suffolk County are governed by NY Vehicle and Traffic Law 1224. Vehicles left 96 hours on public ways or 48 hours with visible damage may be removed. Private-property abandoned vehicles require owner/town action under local property maintenance codes.
NY V&T Law 1224 defines abandoned vehicles and authorizes municipalities to remove them after 96 hours on public highways. Town of Brookhaven Code 31-1 prohibits unregistered or inoperable vehicles on private residential property unless stored in an enclosed garage. Town of Islip 68-403 prohibits junked vehicles visible from the street. Removed vehicles are held for 10 days, then may be sold at auction. Registered owners receive notice via certified mail. Environmental fluids (oil, antifreeze, gas) must be drained before disposal under NY ECL 27.
Towing fees $150-$400 plus $25/day storage. Private property violations $250-$1,000 per vehicle, per day.
