Decatur, GA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

City Code § 98-17, Parking restrictions for commercial vehicles on residential streets, makes it unlawful for any person to stop, stand or park a truck or other commercial or freight-carrying vehicle exceeding three-quarter ton capacity, defined as 8,700 pounds gross vehicle weight maximum as identified or classified by the manufacturer, on any public street within a residentially zoned district for longer than two hours. The same two-hour cap applies to buses. The only exception is when the vehicle is actually engaged in loading or unloading operations at the time.

The residentially-zoned district boundary is defined by reference to the city's zoning ordinance rather than restated in this section. The rule was adopted by Ord. No. O-98-01, § 1, on January 20, 1998, and sits in Chapter 98, Article I alongside the front-yard parking ban of § 98-16 and the narrow-street parking ban of § 98-18, all enforced as part of the city's general traffic and vehicles code. Because the vehicle-weight threshold is defined by the manufacturer's own gross vehicle weight rating rather than a measurement taken at the curb, a pickup truck or van rated below 8,700 pounds is not covered by this restriction even if it is used commercially, while box trucks, delivery trucks and similar vehicles above that rating are covered regardless of whether they are marked as commercial.
