Commercial vehicles exceeding 1 ton capacity or 10,000 lb GVWR cannot be regularly parked in residential zoning districts in Herndon. Tractor-trailers, dump trucks, buses, and heavy equipment are prohibited on residential streets overnight. Violations can result in fines and towing.
Under the Herndon Zoning Ordinance and Town Code Chapter 74, commercial vehicles are strictly regulated in residential zones. A commercial vehicle is defined as any vehicle over 1 ton rated capacity, any vehicle with commercial lettering or advertising, tow trucks, taxicabs on duty, vehicles with more than 2 axles, tractor-trailers, buses (except school buses parked for authorized purposes), dump trucks, cement mixers, heavy construction equipment, and similar. These vehicles cannot be regularly parked or stored at residences in R-1, R-2, R-3, R-4, or other residential districts. Limited exceptions allow commercial vehicles to park briefly on residential streets or at residences for active service calls, deliveries, or temporary loading/unloading, typically not exceeding 2 hours. Overnight parking (2 AM to 6 AM) of prohibited commercial vehicles on any residential street subjects the operator to citation and potential tow. Small commercial vehicles such as contractor pickups under 1 ton without trailers or roof racks displaying ladders/materials are generally acceptable. Panel vans and service vehicles under 10,000 lb GVWR without commercial lettering are typically permitted. Tractor-trailer rigs and semi-trucks cannot be parked on public streets in the Town at any time. Violations result in citations starting at 75 dollars, with repeat offenses escalating to 250 dollars and potential towing. Commercial parking must be accommodated at the contractor's place of business, an approved commercial vehicle storage lot, or an industrial-zoned property.
