Kingsport, TN Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 98-219 of the Kingsport Code sets the core rule for heavy vehicles. Subsection (a) bars parking any truck or motor vehicle of more than 18,000 pounds gross weight, or any trailer or semitrailer, whether or not attached to a tractor, on any street from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The exemption covers trucks, trailers and semitrailers parked while actually engaged in loading or unloading, or when the driver is in attendance with the truck. The section is not limited to residential streets: it reaches any street in the City of Kingsport, Tennessee.

Subsection (b) is a separate hazardous-cargo rule. No person can park a truck or motor vehicle used for transporting any explosive, or more than 50 gallons of gasoline, kerosene, benzol, naphtha or other volatile liquids, on any street or alley from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., regardless of whether the vehicle is loaded or empty. Unlike subsection (a), subsection (b) prints no loading or attendance exemption.

Width adds a second test. Section 98-265 makes it unlawful to stop, stand or park a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer wider than 80 inches on any street in the city for longer than is necessary for the expeditious loading and unloading of freight or property, and never longer than two hours at any one time.

City-owned lots have their own limits. Under § 98-233(c), a vehicle exceeding 24 feet in length or weighing in excess of three tons, and any truck, semitrailer or trailer, cannot be parked in a parking facility without a valid city issued parking pass, and a trailer and its towing vehicle must display separate passes. Section 98-233(a) defines a truck as a vehicle primarily designed for hauling cargo, or as the moving device for permanently mounted equipment, exceeding 24 feet in overall length or having more than two axles.
