Thornton, CO Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 38-429 requires a permit for any commercial, non-passenger motor vehicle weighing 8,000 pounds or more gross vehicle weight, classified as a type (b) prohibited motor vehicle under Section 38-386, that is stored or parked in a residential zoning district. The director will not grant a permit if the vehicle exceeds ten feet in height, eight feet six inches in width, 24 feet in length, or 20,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. A resident applies to the director with the property owner's approval (if the applicant is not the owner), a site plan showing the parking location and a paved, dustless surface meeting Section 18-659(d)(2), the vehicle's make, model, year, color, VIN and current registration, and an application fee set by city council resolution.

Once granted, the permit is valid only for that specific vehicle and address, limited to one permit per residential lot at a time, and must be displayed in the vehicle's front or rear window whenever it is parked. No part of the vehicle may cross a property line, obstruct a public or private walk, or fully block access to a side or rear yard. § 42-14-105. A permit is revocable at any time for cause on a complaint by the city manager or an aggrieved resident, with the revocation appealable to a hearing officer appointed by the city manager.
