Thornton, CO Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 38-521 adopts the 2020 Edition of the Model Traffic Code for Colorado Municipalities as Thornton's traffic ordinance, and Section 38-523 lists the city's specific additions and modifications to that model code. Item ZZ of Section 38-523 rewrites Model Traffic Code Section 1204, "Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specified places," adding several Thornton-specific subsections. New subsection (1)(l) bars parking in the area between the curb of a street and the furthest extent of the public right-of-way, and (1)(m) bars parking between the edge of a street or alley and the furthest extent of the right-of-way, except on a shoulder provided for emergencies.

Subsection (1)(n) is a catch-all: no one may park on a street or highway in a manner or under conditions that interfere with the free movement of vehicular traffic or proper street maintenance. Subsection (1)(o) bars parking over or upon a curbwalk unless an attached or detached paved surface for pedestrians, meaning a sidewalk, also exists there. The amendment also enacts subsection (9), which limits alley parking to the necessary and expeditious loading and unloading of merchandise or freight, and separately makes it unlawful to stop, stand, or park a vehicle within an alley in a position that blocks the driveway entrance to any abutting property.

Other 1204 additions cover a 15-foot buffer from fire hydrants and standpipes, a ban on parking in designated safety lanes, a minimum two-foot clearance between parked vehicles, and rules for a driver waiting for a space to clear. Thornton police and code compliance officers enforce these rules under Section 38-491, which applies the Model Traffic Code's enforcement provisions citywide.
