St. George, UT Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

Section 6-2-18 of the St. George City Code assigns meanings to painted curb colors, and the city engineer decides where the painted zones go. Red is the strictest marking in the code. The text says red "shall mean no stopping, standing or parking at any time, except for the individual purposes of emergency vehicles."

Each piece of that sentence does work. "Stopping, standing or parking" covers every way a vehicle can occupy the curb, so pausing with a driver at the wheel is treated the same as leaving the car. "At any time" means there are no open hours, no Sunday relief and no holiday relief. The only exception belongs to emergency vehicles, and only for their own purposes.

The yellow curb shows how much stricter red is. Yellow curbs carry the words "restricted zone" stenciled on them and mean no stopping, standing or parking "except as stated on any accompanying signs or markings giving notice thereof." The yellow rule also does not apply on Sundays and legal holidays. So a yellow curb in St. George depends on what its signs say and takes Sundays and legal holidays off, while a red curb needs no sign to explain it and never switches off.

Once the city engineer places a sign or curb marking under this section, ignoring it is itself the violation. A driver does not have to block traffic or an emergency vehicle for the stop to count. The code credits the curb color language to Ord. 12-3-91, dated 12-19-1991.
