Sterling Heights, MI Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Except as otherwise provided in this article, driveways on single family residential sites shall be constructed of poured concrete or other approved alternative paving material or hard surface pervious material extending from the public sidewalk or lot line to the overhead garage doors of all garages where there is an existing garage or where a garage is proposed to be constructed, or to the front building line where no garage exists or is proposed to be constructed. At a minimum, the driveway and driveway approach shall be constructed of materials approved by the Office of Building, with the base materials compacted to 95% compaction. Any hard surface driveway and driveway approach shall be installed and maintained to provide adequate drainage. The compacted soil or base shall be inspected and approved by the Office of Building prior to installation of the poured concrete, alternative paving material, or hard surface pervious material. The driveway shall be reinforced over all excavated areas, and shall have expansion paper where the driveway meets the sidewalk and the hard surface garage floor. If a concrete driveway is parallel with and abutting a building, an expansion paper shall be installed to separate the driveway from the building or foundation. A control joint shall be installed for every ten feet by ten feet square. Driveway flares shall be installed as required by the Engineering Standards of the Office of Engineering.
