Galt follows California statewide EV permit streamlining under AB 1236 and AB 970. Residential Level 2 chargers qualify for over-the-counter permits processed within one business day, with no discretionary review for code-compliant installations.
California AB 1236 requires every city and county to adopt an expedited permit process for residential and commercial electric vehicle charging stations, and AB 970 sets statutory deadlines. Galt Building Division issues over-the-counter electrical permits for residential Level 2 EV chargers, with the goal of a one-business-day turnaround when the applicant submits a complete checklist including load calculation, panel diagram, and listed equipment data sheets. A licensed C-10 electrical contractor or homeowner acting under the owner-builder exemption may perform the work. Chargers installed in garages typically require a dedicated 240-volt circuit, GFCI protection for exterior installations, and a permanent label at the service panel. Multifamily and commercial installations may trigger parking count impacts under the Galt zoning code, and ADA-accessible EV stalls follow CBC Chapter 11B. Public chargers are available at a growing number of Galt retail sites and along Highway 99. AB 2188 extends similar streamlining to solar, and both laws share enforcement through the Building Standards Commission.
Installing an EV charger without a required electrical permit may result in red-tag, mandatory inspection, and a double-permit-fee penalty. Unlicensed contracting violates BPC 7028.
