Residents and developers installing chargers in unincorporated areas should obtain the required building permit and Building Official approval, and new larger projects should plan for CALGreen EV-ready spaces.
Installing an EV charging station without the required building permit and Building Official approval violates Zoning Code Sec. 7-9-107 and the California Building Code, and is enforceable by OC Development Services. New multifamily or nonresidential construction that fails to provide CALGreen-required EV-ready spaces can fail building/zoning plan check. There is no county-specific fine schedule for EV charging in the parking code; enforcement runs through the building-permit and code-enforcement process.
