Chicopee, MA Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Section 260-21 of the Code of the City of Chicopee sets the time limit for service zones: no person can park a vehicle upon any street in a service zone for longer than 15 minutes, except while actually engaged in loading or unloading, and the loading or unloading cannot exceed 1/2 hour. Section 260-1 defines a SERVICE ZONE as an area in the roadway set aside for the accommodation of commercial and transient vehicular traffic. The definition of PARKING excludes standing temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading.

The City Council picks the locations. Under § 260-24, the location of all bus stops, taxicab stands and service zones is specified by the City Council. Under § 260-11B, §§ 260-18 to 260-23, which include the service zone rule, are effective only while official signs are erected and maintained in each block designating the provisions and located so as to be easily visible to approaching drivers.

Section 260-64, Schedule V, designates loading zones where parking is prohibited, listed by street name, side, hours/days and location. Among the printed rows, Cabot Street lists 61 Cabot Street with hours All. Center Street lists the west side, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m./Monday through Friday, from Chestnut Street to a point 50 feet south thereof. Front Street lists 325 Front Street at 15 mins./All. Thaddeus Street lists the Ward 8 side, 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m./Monday through Friday. Section 260-30.1 adds that on the entire length of Thaddeus Street, trucks or any vehicles idling or standing for more than five minutes face fines of $50, $100 and $200 for the first, second and third offenses.

Heavy commercial vehicles have a separate limit. Section 260-28 bars parking or standing a motor vehicle of 26,001 pounds or more, or exceeding 24 feet in length, for more than one hour on any day or at any time on Sunday on City streets, but the rule does not apply during actual service or delivery or in an emergency. Section 260-1 defines ACTUAL SERVICE DELIVERY as actually engaged in services, including loading or unloading of goods, supplies or merchandise at a City resident's premises.
