Unincorporated Hidalgo County has no ordinance banning overnight parking on public roads, but a vehicle left too long can become an abandoned vehicle under state law.
Because Texas counties cannot broadly regulate on-street parking, there is no countywide overnight-parking prohibition in unincorporated Hidalgo County. However, the Texas Transportation Code sets a firm limit: under Section 683.002, a motor vehicle left unattended on public property can be classified as abandoned once specific time thresholds pass, exposing it to impoundment. A vehicle that is inoperable and more than five years old becomes abandoned after 48 hours on public property. Overnight parking within McAllen, Edinburg, or another city follows that city's own ordinance.
No county overnight-parking fine; a vehicle meeting the abandoned-vehicle definition may be taken into custody and towed under Chapter 683.
